Raelene Frances is Professor of History and Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. She has published widely on aspects of Australian social history. Her books include ‘The Politics of Work’, which won the Australian Historical Association’s Hancock Prize, ‘Women and the Great War’ (co-authored with Bruce Scates), which won the New South Wales Premier’s History Prize and ‘Selling Sex: A Hidden History of Prostitution’, which was short-listed for the Ernest Scott History Prize. She is one of the lead researchers on an Australian Research Council Linkage Project on the History of Anzac Day at Home and Abroad. This is a collaborative project in partnership with the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs and a range of international historians and cultural institutions, including the National Museum of Australia, the Australian National Archives and the Historial de la Grande Guerre in France. Rae Frances has taught Australian history, women’s studies, New Zealand history and Australian studies at universities in Melbourne, Perth, Auckland and Sydney. She is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Australian Award for University Teaching which she shared with her colleague, Bruce Scates. Together they took Monash University undergraduates on an annual study tour to the battlefields of Gallipoli and the Western Front. She is a former member of the Council of the National Museum of Australia and former Chair of the Advisory Council for the Australian Intercultural Society.
